Things to do in High Wycombe: heritage, parks and a night out

Plan a museum visit, a park walk, a trip to Hughenden or an evening at the Wycombe Swan.

Start with the town’s chairmaking story

Wycombe Museum brings together the history of High Wycombe and the surrounding area, with a particular focus on furniture-making. It is a good choice if you want an outing that explains something distinctive about the town rather than simply filling an afternoon. The museum also has grounds to explore.

Its website distinguishes the Priory Avenue museum from the Chair Discovery Centre on St Mary’s Street, which operates on public open days. Check the correct location and date for the visit you have in mind. Do not assume both sites are open whenever one has an event.

Choose a walk to suit the time available

The Rye is a useful starting point for a local park outing. Build a short visit around a walk and somewhere nearby to eat, and check the weather and facilities before travelling with children or someone who needs a particular route. Winter conditions can change what makes a comfortable walk.

For a more substantial visit, Hughenden has its own National Trust visitor information. Check the house, grounds, admission and access arrangements separately. A park walk in High Wycombe and a visit to a historic property are different plans, with different travel and cost considerations.

See what is playing at the Swan

The Wycombe Swan programme includes theatre, music, comedy and family entertainment. Some events take place at the Old Town Hall rather than in the main theatre, so read the venue name on the individual booking page before planning your evening.

Choose the performance first, then check the start time, age guidance, seating and accessibility options. Prices and booking conditions vary between shows. What’s On provides a locally checked selection for the current and following month, with links back to the organisers for availability.

Make a small local plan

An outing can be as simple as browsing a shop, stopping for lunch and visiting one attraction. The town centre, Hazlemere, Downley and Wooburn Green each offer a different group of stops, so use the actual address rather than assuming every listing is close to the station.

Contact venues directly if you need step-free access, space for a pushchair, a group booking or particular dietary arrangements. For an appointment-based workshop or studio, arrange the visit first. A short call can make the day easier and avoid a journey to premises that are not open to walk-in visitors.
